Postural Integration

A Postural Integration (PI) Facilitator guides other people to deep and lasting changes of habitual behavioural patterns, restoring posture and releasing blocked energy through breath, deep muscular and emotional release. A practitioner is not a therapist but a facilitator of self exploration.

Postural Integration is 'postural' as it is a way of releasing rigid postures, the unconscious physical, emotional and mental habits we have developed for coping with our selves, stress, trauma and the world. It is also an 'integration' by helping us assimilate this energy and freedom into our lives, by helping us try new movements, feelings and attitudes. It is a process of shifting a victim experience to one of empowerment.

Connective tissue, or fascia a thin elastic material which envelopes and co-ordinates the muscles, is one of the principle means by which emotional imbalance is sustained. A practitioner uses fingers, hands and forearms to systematically re-distribute bunched and disorganized layers of fascia, permitting over-contracted muscles to relax and their opposing over-stretched muscles to contract. When muscles are restored to an easy, balanced tone, the bones, without any direct manipulation then can better articulate with each other and form an upright skeleton which more evenly distributes the body weight, creating a new flexible alignment in which energy flows freely. It is not a medical modality but rather the exploration of change.

While working with the fascia, the practitioner encourages the client simultaneously to breathe more freely, to express blocked emotions and thoughts and to explore new physical movements. As our physical posture changes, so too does the quality of our experience.
